Course Overview

The Supervise Tunnelling Work for Workplace Safety and Health (STWSH), formerly known as the Building Construction Safety Supervisors (Tunnelling) Course (BCSS Tunnelling) equips participants to manage and ensure safety in deep excavation and tunneling works. You will learn to interpret relevant WSH legislations, identify and control hazards, evaluate risks, and ensure effective safety measures are in place. The course also covers monitoring workers’ health in compressed-air environments and assisting with emergency evacuation procedures.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, you’ll be equipped to:

  • Explain and interpret WSH legislations and other requirements relevant to deep excavation and tunnelling works
  • Identify WSH hazards including unsafe work conditions and practices in deep excavation and tunnelling work-site
  • Evaluate and control risks in accordance with the organizational Risk Management Plan
  • Identify gaps in the existing control measures and report to management for appropriate corrective actions and preventive actions
  • Monitor and review the health condition of workers in a compressed-air environment
  • Assist in the evacuation of workers in an emergency

Prerequisites:

Before beginning this course, it’s essential to have the following:

  • Learners must have completed the Building Construction Supervisor Safety Course (BCSS) or Supervise Construction Work for WSH (SCWSH)
  • Assumed skills and knowledge – Recommended for the trainee to achieve WSQ ESS Workplace Literacy and Numeracy Level 4.
  • Learners are expected to be 18 years old and above.

  • WSH legal and other requirements relevant to deep excavation and tunnelling works
  • WSH hazards associated with deep excavation and tunnelling works
  • Unsafe work conditions and practices
  • Safety planning and organization for deep excavation and tunnelling works
  • Gaps in the existing control measures
  • Appropriate corrective actions and preventive actions
  • Health considerations in deep excavation and tunnelling works
  • Types and Characteristics of Decompression Illnesses (DCI)
  • Evacuation and rescue procedures
  • Communication system in deep excavation and tunnelling works

Certifications Granted:

WSQ (SOA) Statement of Attainment (e-certificate) will be issued for the courses conducted in English only.

Medium of Instruction: English, Mandarin. Facilitator and Learner ratio – 1:25

Assessment Methods: Written Assessment (180 mins) & Individual Project Assignment.

Passing criteria: Written Assessment – 65% & above; Individual Project Assignment – 65% & above.

Trainees with 100% attendance will only be allowed to sit for the test. Latecomers are strictly not allowed into the class

Participants must complete the individual project assignments, outside the lesson time, & submit them within 7 days after the course. Participants are required to come for an individual project assignment briefing within 14 days, after the course. The duration of the briefing is about 5 minutes/participant.
