Course Overview

The Supervise Safe Lifting Operations Course | SSLO, formerly known as, Lifting Supervisor Safety Course | LSSC, aims to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to supervise the crane operator in the maneuver of a load safely to its destination.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, you’ll be equipped to:

  • Have the knowledge and skills to supervise safe lifting operations involving a mobile crane, tower crane, or any other crane in the workplace.

Prerequisites:

Before beginning this course, it’s essential to have the following:

  • Learners must have completed the WSQ/MOM Rigging and Signalman course or the Marine Rigger and Signalman course.
  • Learners must have relevant experience in lifting operations for at least 3 months (supported by company / individual application letter to indicate the periods of pertinent experience in lifting operations.
  • Must be 21 years old and above.

Assumed Skills & Knowledge:
Learners are assumed to:

  • Have basic knowledge of the relevant sector or work
  • Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills (ES) level 4
  • Be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills (ES) level 4
  • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills (ES) level 4 and
  • Be medically fit.

100% attendance is required to be eligible to sit for the examination. Medium of Instruction: English, Mandarin.

Learning Units:

  • Comply with Risk Assessment
  • Check to ensure adherence to legislations and organisational safe work procedures
  • Brief all crane operators, riggers, and signalmen on the lifting plan
  • Check to ensure proper usage of appropriate PPE and tagline for personnel in lifting operations
  • Interpret load charts to verify the intended lift is within the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the crane
  • Verify pre-lift inspection of crane, lifting gear and accessories
  • Check to ensure proper set up of communication equipment serviceability of communications equipment and functionality of radio channels for safe lifting operations
  • Supervise cordoning off lifting and lowering areas using effective barricades with prominent warning signages
  • Report and rectify any abnormalities/defects in the crane, lifting gear accessories, and communications equipment according to organisational procedures
  • Apply preventive measures and hazard control of lifting accidents according to organisational procedures
  • Ensure that only registered crane operators, and appointed signalmen participate in any lifting operations involving the use of mobile and tower crane

Certifications Granted:

WSQ (SOA) Statement of Attainment (e-certificate) will be issued for the courses conducted in English only.

10 SDU Points applicable (Validity Period for SDU points – 1 Jul 2024 to 31 Dec 2024). WSHO can claim SDU points once only, for a course. The SDU points could not be claimed for a repeat or refresher course.

Assessment:
3 Hours (Written Assessment (WA) – 2 hours; Practical Performance (PP) – 1 hour).

Written Assessment format:
Section 1: Part A Lifting plan, 10 Questions of 2 marks each;
Part B – Rigger and Signalman tasks, 10 Questions of 1 mark each
Part C – Others, 55 Questions of 1 mark each

Section 2: Load chart 5 Questions of 3 marks each.
Passing marks:
WA– Section 1 65%, Section 2 – 100%; Practical Performance – 100%.
