Perform Manhole Safety Assessment

Course Overview

The Perform Manhole Safety Assessment course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to safely assess and manage hazards in manholes and confined spaces. Participants will learn to prepare gas testing plans, identify hazards, perform gas monitoring, implement control measures, and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment. The course also covers ongoing atmospheric monitoring to ensure a safe working environment.

Prerequisites:

Learners are assumed to have:

  • Employability Skills (ES) Workplace Literacy level 4 and above.
  • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ES Workplace Numeracy level 4 and above.
  • Upon successfully completion of the
    • WSQ Supervise Work in Confined Space Operation (formerly known as Safety Instruction Course (Manhole) for Supervisor) or
    • WSQ Supervise Construction Work for Workplace Safety and Health (formerly known as Building Construction Supervisors Safety Course) with at least 3 years of relevant experience in confined spaces/manholes

Note: Participants have to produce a company letter to show that the trainee has fulfilled at least 3 years of relevant experience in Manholes with the current employers.

Learning Units:

  • Prepare gas testing plan for gas testing based on safe work practices and regulatory requirement
  • Identify types of atmospheric, physical, and biological manhole and/or confined space hazards
  • Perform gas monitoring test procedures by identifying appropriate types of gas monitoring instruments to measure atmospheric hazards
  • Implement manhole and/or confined spaces hazard preventive and control measures
  • Identify, set up, and perform pre-checking of personal protective equipment prior to entering the manhole and/or confined space
  • Prepare and conduct period monitoring schedule for atmospheric hazards based on typical manhole with connection to other underground spaces

Target Audience
The “Perform Manhole Safety Assessment” is a mandatory training course for all workers working in construction sites and related industries.
Trainees are required to bring along a Scientific Calculator for the Course/Exam
Legal Requirements
Under the WORKPLACE SAFETY AND HEALTH (CONFINED SPACES) REGULATIONS 2009, before any person enters or works in a confined space, it shall be the duty of his responsible person to appoint a person whom the responsible person reasonably believes is competent to carry out the duties of a Manhole safety assessor, as a Manhole safety assessor for the confined space.
